April’s Story
April has been receiving pediatric care at Sadler for nearly a decade under the guidance of our Medical Director Katrina “Kat” Thoma, CRNP. Kat had been tracking April’s developmental delays, joint challenges and unexplained weight loss. Routine tests offered no answers, but Kat’s instincts told her something serious was being missed.
Refusing to Give Up
When an insurance provider denied a CT scan – because April wasn’t in pain, only experiencing occasional digestive issues – Kat refused to stop advocating. She pushed directly with a UPMC Pediatric Hospitalist to get April admitted and approved for imaging.
That persistence paid off. The CT scan revealed multiple polyps and a rare genetic defect that dramatically increased April’s risk for gastrointestinal cancers. Surgery confirmed early-stage cancer – caught just in time.
Hope and Healing
Today, April is cancer-free and thriving, continuing her care at Sadler with ongoing monitoring for her genetic condition. Her story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when care is personal, persistent and rooted in compassion.
